Horsepower and Speed
Components of the internal combustion engines vary greatly based upon the manufacturer.
Electric motors for Golf Carts, however, are very similar, regardless of brand. Power and
speed is regulated by the amount of current in amps that goes to the motor and the gear ratios
of the drive train. Unlike your motor car, there is no transmission or clutches. A 2-3 horsepower
motor can easily move a 2000 kilo trailer. For safety, Golf Carts are limited to a speed of
(15 - 20 kph) 12-18 mph regardless of horsepower.

Electric or Gas?? Which way do I go??
Electric carts have made tremendous advances in the last decade. With less than 50 moving parts
very little can go wrong with an electric cart. Petrol carts, on the other hand, have over 1000
moving parts. In the USA, petrol Golf Carts are rarely used, resulting in very few for the
resale market. The noise, smell and exhaust fumes are disliked and add to the lack of popularity.
In addition, electric Golf Carts now have the capability to go in excess of 70 kilometres
between charges. A goodrule is if you need to use the cart for very long periods in a day
then maybe Petrol is the way to go, especially if the noise and very slight pollution is not a problem.
These Carts are very fuel efficient and as long as you can get to fuel, they will run for 24 hours
a day. If the terrain is fairly flat and the Cart is not going to be used a great deal in a normal
day then choose Electric. They are quiet, easy to maintain and in a "normal" environment will
last for years.

Tune-ups and Servicing
There is no need for a tune-up for an electric Golf Cart, since there are few moving parts.
Lubrication of a few key areas is the only requirement.
Petrol Carts however should be serviced regularly depending on their usage. If the cart is used
only once or twice a week then a service once every 6 months is quite adequate. Parts such as
"belts", "brakes", "spark plugs", "filters" should all be checked, cleaned or replaced.

Brakes
Most Golf Carts have brakes only in the rear. They are mechanical in nature, like the parking
brake on your motor car. There are no hydraulics or need for brake fluid. Periodic adjustment
and brake shoe replacement is required at intervals, depending upon usage.

Age
The age of a Golf Cart has little to do with its value. Unlike your car, a well maintained 10 year
old Golf Cart can have as much or more value as a poorly maintained 5 year old Golf Cart. The
condition of the body, frame, roof, batteries and the charger are the key areas of concern
when determining the value of a trade-in.

New Golf Carts
Due to the rise in costs of materials, import costs, transportation and market, new Golf Carts
can cost well over $10,000.00. Some buyers demand the absolute latest in technology and
style. New Golf Carts or specialty Golf Carts ( some costing over $20,000.00 ) are available.

Previously Owned Golf Carts
Good Previously owned Golf Carts are hard to find here in Australia. The cost ranges from
$4,000.00 to $8,000.00, depending upon age, brand and condition. These Golf Carts if sold
privately are sold "AS IS". If purchased through a second hand Dealer or Distributorship
then Carts should have some sort of Warranty included. Accessories can then be added.
Scratches, dents and blemishes are common. Economical and mechanically sound, these
Golf Carts can provide years of enjoyment and use at a tremendous savings when compared
with new carts.

Re-conditioned Golf Carts
Later model used Golf Carts that have been "spruced up". The obvious blemishes such as torn
seats, severely worn tires or damaged moldings and mats are repaired or replaced. These
Golf Carts are used by individuals and companies that place value on the appearance of their
equipment. The investment of $5,000.00 to $8,000.00 is the range for the base carts.
Accessories can then be added.

Re-Manufactured Golf Carts
This process is far more involved than reconditioning. It requires the full removal of the top and
body parts, leaving only the exposed frame and chassis. The frame is then pressure cleaned and
detailed. All mechanical components are then inspected and replaced as needed. New tyres and
wheel assemblies are installed while the body is being prepared to the customer's specifications.
The type of paint and trim results in a product that is many times superior to the original. All
newpedal and floor pads, seat skin covers and safety decals are replaced. Custom accessories
arethen added to make an individual statement. For commercial users, a wide array of options
including 4 passenger and utility kits can be added. The remanufactured Golf Cart can be
outfitted with the most popular options and is not very common here in Australia.

Batteries
Each battery has a stamp which indicates the month and year it was manufactured. If you cannot
clearly read the stamp there is no way of determining its age. Batteries last from 3-5 years under
normal circumstances. The level of the battery water should be about 15mm over the plates.
Battery manufacturers were asked what is the best way to charge your batteries?
Their answer was to recharge the batteries every time you discharge them. That's simple enough.
They will last longer if they dont get discharged below about 60% constantly.
There are six (6) Batteriesin the average Golf Cart. When they are replaced they should be
replaced in a complete set.

Chargers
Most of today's chargers are fully automatic, which means they will discontinue charging
when the batteries are at full capacity. Golf Carts use special chargers that have a matched
output to the Golf Cart electrical system. Never use a charger that is not made for a Golf Cart.
